Poverty

Half of the Philippines populations have lived in poverty. Poverty is one of the most severe problems in the Philippines. Almost 80 percent of the living population in this country lives in rural areas. Agriculture is the primary and often only source of income for poor rural people, most of whom depend on subsistence farming and fishing for their livelihoods. In general, illiteracy, unemployment and the incidence of poverty are higher among indigenous peoples and people living in the upland areas. Overall, more than a third of the people in the Philippines live in poverty.

Things that Contribute to Poverty

Lack of Infrastructures

The lack of structures prevents the economy from growing and makes poverty in the Philippines. Even worse, there’s been a dire lack of investment in infrastructure, as much to invest in new projects as to maintain existing infrastructure.

Corrupt Government officials

On the upside, the new government openly acknowledges the interaction between corruption, inefficient governments and poverty in the Philippines. There’s still to see if it will actually act on it.But the task is quite daunting: inequalities are deep and widespread in the country.

High Taxes

The Philippines' tax system demands more than what poor people earn. The tax system is ran by corrupt government officials as well.

International Debt

When it comes to debt, the Philippines owes a lot from the world bank and IMF. due to the debts made by Bangko Sentral, almost half of the collected taxes goes to them to pay for the said debts.

Fourth Estate

Fourth Estate is one of the poorest subdivisions located in Paranaque City and consists of more than a thousand poor families that are compacted and crowded in a very small area. Fourth estate is home to tricycle drivers, market vendors and informal settlers that are in drastic need of money to support their families. Crimes and illegal affairs are present in the vicinity due to extreme poverty and abjection.

How You Can Help

The smallest steps can create the biggest changes.

1. Be Informed.

Knowing what the situation is, is the best way to start.

2. Stay updated.

Looking at the news only once or twice isn't enough. Continue to update yourself on a weekly or daily basis.

3. Spread the Word.

Telling  at least one or two people can actually make a change. Keep spreading the word to inform others.

4. Accept differences.

Some of the people you inform and meet may have different views or lash out. Accept these differences openly and reevaluate.

5. Respect others.

Respect
everyone, even those who do not agree. Find common ground to understand each other. Your kindness can influence others.

6. Be a helping hand.

Helping is important. Even just giving your snack to someone in need can make a change.

7. Get to know others.

Meet people and organizations. These people can enable you to reach out to the poor a step further. Donating to these organizations can help people who suffer due to poverty.

8. Volunteer yourself.

Doing more will enable you to directly interact, know and help people experiencing poverty. Volunteering yourself willingly for the cause both benefits the organization you joined and yourself. Volunteering opens your mind and allows you to learn new things.

9. Take bigger steps.

Small steps can create big changes, but if you are willing and able to take further action to fight poverty, then do so. Finding your own new and unique way to help out is the best way you can help the people in need.
